World’s oldest person dies in Japan at 114

Mon Aug 13, 11:17 AM ET

TOKYO (AFP) - The world’s oldest person, a Japanese woman who counted eating well and getting plenty of sleep as the secret of her longevity, died Monday at age 114, a news report said.

Yone Minagawa, who lived in a nursing home but was still sprightly late in life, died "of old age" Monday evening, Kyodo News reported.

… [summarised]

Born on January 4, 1893, Minagawa blew out the candles on her own birthday cake earlier this year.

She was already in her 50s when Japan surrendered in World War II, starting a new era for her country.

Widowed at an early age, she reportedly raised her five children by selling flowers and vegetables in a coal mining town.

Despite her advanced age, Minagawa was said to enjoy eating sweets and counted eating well and getting a good night’s sleep as the secrets of her longevity.

… [summarised]

Hmm. I don’t know what to make of this fairly uninteresting news.

Just… Maybe… Maybe tomorrow’s headline, "World’s Youngest Person Born"?

And… you know what guys? This is about the umpteenth time I’ve read about the world’s oldest person dying. Seriously.

I…. I think the record for the "World’s Oldest Person" is cursed or something. They all die. And real fast at that.

One Reason Why We All Hate ODEX. Just One.

I finally found a use for the school’s Strait Times website accounts, which I thought were plain pointless. Login into the website and got this article off.

It’s on The Strait Times today, page 3. The article is quite long, so the gist of it is here:

StarHub must give names of illegal anime downloaders
By Chua Hian Hou
THE Singapore distributor of popular Japanese animated cartoons called anime has won the right to track down fans who download the programmes illegally using their Starhub Internet accounts.

A Subordinate Court has ordered the telco to disclose the identity of about 1,000 of its subscribers accused of illegally downloading anime.

It is believed to be one of the largest crackdowns on illegal Internet downloading by home users in Singapore.

The recent hearing was held in a closed chamber session, so few details of the case are available publicly. The action was taken by local anime distributor Odex.

StarHub had initially resisted the company’s efforts to get its customer data, said a spokesman for the telco, as it had ‘an obligation to protect our customers’ information’.

But it now has no choice but to comply with the court order, as Odex had ’satisfied the court of its need for the information’.

Once Odex obtains the identities of these Internet users from StarHub, it is expected to write to them demanding a settlement of up to $5,000 and a promise to stop further illegal downloading.

In May, Odex went after 17 SingNet subscribers after obtaining a similar court order. It then sent more letters to an undisclosed number of other SingNet subscribers also accused of illegally downloading anime.

Odex director Peter Go said a few infringers with financial difficulties were allowed to settle for about $1,000. He added that a number of those who had received the letter had engaged lawyers, but did not contest Odex’s case.

Having succeeded in getting SingNet and StarHub customer lists, Odex will now go after customers of another Internet service provider, Pacific Internet (PacNet), in the Subordinate Courts later this week. It is understood Odex has accused about 1,000 PacNet users of illegal downloading.

PacNet spokesman Bernard Ho said the firm was ‘resisting the application’ made by Odex in court.

Right. You read that, and now if you’re a true internet user, you’re probably now thinking "Oh hell this sucks."

Because it really does.

Odex is the official local anime distributor company. As far as I’m aware, they’re the only idiotic company who decides to take serious action on people doing what the internet is best for. Other than porn.

There are probably other warning cases, but that’s as far as it goes. The Internet Service Provider (be it SingNet, Starhub or PacNet) sends a warning letter, blasts the user, the user gets scared, tells everyone about it, everyone gets scared, the user changes ISP, and everything’s fine again. Quite a perfect world.

Odex decides "HAY LET’S CHARGE THESE ILLEGAL PIRATED ASSES IN COURT" and their lawyers (I expect to be many) are like "OH YEAH HELL LET’S DO THAT."

They’re just so… what’s the word? Thick-skinned? Or in other dictionaries, irritating morons. First they pursue the matter with billion-dollar-networth SingTel/SingNet, then another giant firm Starhub, and are still riding high of their string of successes and gonna screw with PacNet as well.

Heck, one day everyone’s gonna change to use QMAX as their ISP.

And heck, one day those lawyers and the guys at Odex themselves gonna go online, log on to BitTorrent and go "WTF NO SINGAPORE SEEDERS AND LEECHERS?? WHERE DID EVERYONE GO???"

Because we all know, they themselves probably are illegal pirates. I mean, which lifeless idiot isn’t?

I’m just thankful that Starhub and PacNet tries to protect our identity and private information. That bit is good.

Hold Back

I’ve decided.

One may call it, To Abnegate. Or Abstain. Or Refrain.

The point is, I’ll hold back.

And wait.

I think I should. I think I can.

Hopefully, for the better. Just hang on…

Sunday Special: Top 5 Websites

Posted by HELiX

Today I wanted to test and tune the Tesla Coil, get it over with once and for all [after 5 friggin' months!] but aye, my family had to go out for dinner.

So, in order not to lose visitors…

Let’s have a Sunday Special. For today, the Top 5 Websites.

Not just any Top 5 list. Or websites’ list, for that matter.

These 5 aren’t the best around, if not Google and Neopets would have made my list. Let’s look into the Top 5 weirdest/dumbest/interesting/unknown/wasteful websites that You-Didn’t-Know-But-Would-Like-To-For-A-Possibly-Good-Laugh.

Here goes:

5. Helixated.com/photo, Helixated.com/about

I sent the About page back to the recycle bin because it got me into trouble. I think.

And I never really found the time to redo the photo page.

Really, these aren’t just excuses. They’re good excuses.

4. Fatboy-alone-in-the-rain.blogspot.com

This blog has a most interesting URL which kinda stunned me the first time I saw it. Shameless yet humorous it may sound, but this blog covers more philosophies than The Matrix, The Matrix: Reloaded, The Matrix: Revolution and LOST combined.

3. Googolplexian.com

1 zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zero-zeroooooooooooo…

2. Something.com

Yet nothing.

1. Cool.com

Just go there. Just visit there.

This guy is a retard and should be shot dead, sat on by Fatboy, read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to, and shot dead again if he hasn’t jumped off of a bridge by now.

from ZDnet in 2000: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-519606.html

"Tim Lee was a senior in college five years ago when he registered the domain name Cool.com, almost on a lark. Friends scoffed, but Lee may be getting the last laugh: He says he recently got an offer for the name worth up to US$38 million."

That’s pretty awesome. Smart guy, right?

Further reading:

"It’s tempting," Lee admitted. "But the opportunities for using such a brand for marketing and a long-term business strategy are a lot more compelling. Long term, we have an opportunity to really develop a global brand that is a force to be reckoned with."

This moronic idiot could’ve been a millionaire overnight. Instead he kept the domain and now look at it. It’s parked.

What a dumbass.

Lab@Home: Tesla Coil 100% Progress!

Posted by HELiX

OK!

After the miserable success of my Tesla Coil (as in, it worked), I decided to build a proper stand for easier setup, kickass looks, and… more manageable for storage when I’m done with it.

So a few weeks ago (almost a month actually), I got my Dad to do up a stand for it. I described to him what I wanted: Two-decks, 4 supports, on wheels…

After a week or two, he got it done, but I kept requesting for minor fixes and changes. Also, the National Day holidays FINALLY gave me some time to carry on from his work.

It was looking really ugly with yellow, white, gray and brown. The 4 supports are PVC pipes, and the wooden blocks are used to hold things in place.

If there’s one thing I learned from Apple’s iPod, it’ll be that Immaculate White looks awesome.

dsc_0323-500×500.JPG

S$9.00 on white spray paint. Stupid iPods teaching stupid things…

Spent almost 2 days mounting the Tesla Coil permanently into the stand. Had to drilled more holes, add more wooden blocks to hold stuffs in place, drill in hooks, adjust the length of wires to fit the structure nicely, etc… and finally spray painting it white again.

The design had features and stuffs that include:

A hook to hold the long ground wire and the ground copper rod. So it’s much more manageable and convenient now.

The 15kV transformer, Spark Gap and Capacitor Bank arranged nicely in place in the lower deck. All cables are insulated with fish tank tubing, and adjusted shorter to keep it neat and tidy. The transformer is also on wheels, as I can’t move the Tesla Coil setup with it on. The transformer alone is possibly heavier than the rest of the Tesla Coil.

The toroid mounted firmly on the secondary coil.

Primary coil is supported by 4 PVC pipes.

dsc_0429-500×500.JPG

Secondary coil’s termination is done by attaching it to some aluminium tape, and using a hole puncher to allow connection to wire lug end of the ground wire.

dsc_0435-500×500.JPG

Termination of the primary coil (from the inner round) is made by twisting the flexible copper pipe down a bit, fitting on a wire lug and taping it up.

And finally, the fully completed setup of the Tesla Coil.

Awesome, isn’t it? :P

I wanted to test it out and tune it to resonance (achieving maximum performance) yesterday, but there was class BBQ. And today, I’m right now at my mum’s friend house for dinner. So, hopefully tomorrow!

Adobe SMARTASS Fix

Posted by HELiX

After much time wasting on Adobe installations, I’ve finally owned all the geeks who experienced this problem (a Google search proves that they are many of them) and were unable to solve it.

ALL UR BASE ARE BELONG TO ME AHAHAHAHAHA.

Ahem.

Here’s the Ultimate Solution:

1) Get another hard drive. Let’s assume you’re using Original Adobe software. There’s Photoshop CS3 Extended coming in cheaply at S$2000. What’s a $100 hard drive to you?

2) Boot from new hard drive. Install Windows on the new hard drive. Recommended: Save costs on Windows by installing pirated copy. Microsoft don’t need your money anyway.

3) Install the Adobe softwares on that fresh copy of Windows. Should work.

4) Copy all the files from the Program Files, Common Files and AppData over to the old hard drive. Even the Start Menu shortcuts.

5) Now all your softwares work perfectly fine on the old hard drive. Except, you don’t have the uninstall option in Add/Remove Programs. Too bad.

Hello, CS3 :)
